Method
1. Give each student a copy of the handout. Read through the twenty adverbs at the top of the page and then explain that all of them need to be put into the passages below. There are various possibilities but all twenty must be used (and appropriately!). Warn them to be careful of word order!
2. Give about ten minutes for students to work alone to try to fit all the adverbs into the passages. As they finish, pair them up so that they can compare and discuss what they have done.
3. Each pair now works together on a definitive version of where they feel the adverbs are best placed.
4. For whole class feedback, invite some pairs to read out their versions, write them on the board and ask others to comment.
5. You can extend the activity by asking students to find five more adverbs they could fit into the passages. highlight any particularly interesting examples.
