Bernard Faure
프랑스 출신의 불교학자다. 1984년에 파리 제7대학에서 북종선에 관한 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 1983년부터 미국의 코넬대학교와 스탠포드대학교에서 가르쳤으며, 도쿄대학교와 시드니대학교 등에 방문교수로 머물기도 했다. 2006년부터는 컬럼비아대학교에 재직하면서 동아시아언어문화학과와 종교학과의 교수로 있다. 문화 이론, 인류학, 젠더 연구 등에서 영향을 받은 그는 동아시아 불교의 여러 양상을 다루는데, 주로 선과 밀교에 중점을 두고 있다. 저술로는 이 책 외에도 Chan Insights and Oversights: An Epistemological Critique of the C
