채색 필사본과 고문서 분야의 권위자로 옥스퍼드 대학에서 고문서학으로 박사 학위를, 미네소타 주 세인트 존 대학에서 명예박사 학위를 받았다. 1975년부터 25년 동안 런던 소더비에서 중세 채색 필사본 경매를 담당했다. 고대연구협회와 왕립역사협회의 회원이기도 하다. 현재 케임브리지 코퍼스크리스티 칼리지의 연구직 사서로 일하며, 꾸준히 관련 분야의 저작들을 발표하고 있다. 지은 책으로는 『성서의 역사』『필경사와 채색사들』『채색 필사본의 역사』『로스차일드가의 채색 필사본들』 등이 있다.
