진화생태학자. 에든버러대학교 생물학부 진화생태학 교수로, 식물개체군 생물학 전반에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 생태학과 진화에 관한 다양한 연구 및 저술 활동을 펼쳤다. 특히 요리와 요리 도구의 발명이라는 키워드로 인류 진화의 메커니즘을 풀어 큰 주목을 받았다. 현재는 생물다양성 연구와 봉사 활동에 디지털 도구를 활용하는 방안에 대한 연구를 수행하고 있다. 저서 《먹고 마시는 것들의 자연사》, 《늙는다는 건 우주의 일》, 《씨앗의 자연사》 외에도 수많은 저술과 논문을 발표했다.
