It is possible that in the context of the music and artistic climate of the time Debussy would neverthless have undergone the same development, even without having heard gamelan music. Be that as it may, it would seem that the Javanese performance at the Exposition, which clearly impressed him, would have shown him possibilites in the handling of sonority to which he might not otherwise have been exposed, rather than in the style such as scale, harmony and rhythm. On studying a mutual influence of the East and West, Scholars always should give careful eyes looking into the issue as a whole.
