어떻게 하면 사람들이 환경과 북극곰에 대해 더 많은 관심과 애정을 가질 수 있을까? 더구나 미래를 살아갈 어린이들에게 어떻게 더불어 사는 지혜의 소중함을 일깨워줄까? 이 두 가지 질문이 씨앗이 되어 자라난 그림책 「북극곰 코다」를 자세히 들여다봅니다.

파란 하늘을 제외하고는 모든 것이 하얀 북극곰 마을에 까만 옷을 입은 사냥꾼 보바가 나타납니다. 물론 보바는 북극곰을 잡으러 왔습니다. 하지만 북극곰을 잡는 일은 쉽지가 않습니다. 온통 눈으로 뒤덮여 새하얀 마을에서 온몸이 하얀 털로 뒤덮인 새하얀 북극곰을 어떻게 구별해낼 수가 있겠습니까?

그럼에도 불구하고 북극곰에게도 약점이 있었으니 그건 유난히 크고 까만 코였습니다. 북극곰은 까만 코를 숨겨야 했고 사냥꾼 보바는 까만 코를 찾아야만 했습니다.

한참을 헤매던 보바가 드디어 두 개의 까만 코를 발견합니다. 두 개의 까만 코는 눈밭에서 목욕을 즐기던 엄마 곰과 아기 곰 코다입니다. 엄마 곰은 예민하고 까만 코로 사냥꾼의 냄새를 맡고 벌떡 일어나 아기 곰 코다를 와락 끌어안습니다. 엄마 곰은 아기 곰을 걱정하느라 자신의 크고 까만 코는 미처 생각조차 못한 채 기도만 합니다. 다행이 아기 곰 코다가 엄마의 코를 두 손으로 가려줍니다.
멀리서 총을 겨누던 보바의 눈에는 두 개의 까만 코가 모두 사라져버립니다. 보바는 하는 수 없이 집으로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 보바가 사라진 줄 모른 채 여전히 부둥켜안고 있는 엄마 곰과 아기 곰 위로 축복처럼 눈이 내립니다.

이야기는 북극곰 마을에 사냥꾼이 나타나면서 시작됩니다. 북극곰에게 다행인 것은 사냥꾼 보바가 새하얀 북극에 새까만 옷을 입고 나타날 만큼 똑똑한 편은 아니라는 것입니다. 한편으로 사냥꾼으로 살아가야 하는 보바의 모습은 아무리 문명으로 치장한다 해도 감출 수 없는 인간의 운명 같아서 안쓰럽습니다.

북극에서 보이는 건 북극곰의 까만 코밖에 없다고 할 만큼 북극곰의 코는 유난히 크고 까맣다고 합니다. 북극곰의 하얀 털은 하얀 북극에서 살아가기에 아주 유리한 보호색이지만 크고 까만 코는 너무나 뚜렷한 약점이지요. 아킬레스의 뒤꿈치처럼 까만 코는 북극곰의 유일한 약점이자 자연의 섭리를 엿보게 하는 대목이기도 합니다.

북극곰의 약점을 찾아 헤매던 사냥꾼 보바는 마침내 두 개의 까만 코를 발견하고 일거양득의 기회를 포착합니다. 하지만 엄마 곰의 희생적인 사랑이 아기 곰 코다를 구하고 아기 곰 코다의 침착하고 지혜로운 행동이 엄마 곰을 구합니다.

북극곰의 까만 코는 북극곰에게는 재앙이지만 사냥꾼에게는 기회입니다. 또한 엄마 곰에게 아기 곰의 까만 코는 자신의 목숨조차 아깝지 않은 소중한 존재입니다. 아기 곰에게 엄마 코는 놀라운 후각으로 사냥꾼으로부터 자신을 지켜준 놀랍고도 위대한 엄마의 사랑, 바로 그 자체입니다.

엄마 곰의 위대한 사랑을 지켜낸 것은 아기 곰 코다의 침착한 행동이었습니다. 엄마 곰은 아기 곰을 살려야겠다는 마음 때문에 정작 자신의 크고 까만 코를 감춰야한다는 사실은 생각조차 못합니다. 다행이 엄마 품에 안긴 코다가 제 눈앞의 엄마 코를 살며시 감싸 쥡니다. 이후 북극곰들 사이엔 이런 속담이 유행했을지도 모릅니다.
"사냥꾼에게 발견 되도 정신만 바짝 차리면 살 수 있다."

두 개의 까만 코가 모두 사라지자 사냥꾼 보바는 하는 수 없이 집으로 돌아갑니다. 그리고 몰아치는 눈보라는 사냥꾼 보바와 아기 곰과 엄마 곰 모두를 하얗게 축복합니다. 이 마지막 장면은 마치 자연이 사냥꾼과 북극곰에게 이렇게 말하는 것 같습니다.
"너희들이 조화롭게 공존하는 길을 찾아보아라! 자연은 너희 모두를 사랑하노라!"

이 그림책을 읽고 나면 처음엔 북극곰의 하얀 털을 좋아했던 어린이들이 하얀 털뿐만 아니라 까만 코마저 사랑하게 될 것입니다. 사랑이란 이렇게 상대방에 대해 하나씩 알아가는 과정이며 아는 만큼 사랑은 더 깊어질 것입니다.

또한 인간적인 보바의 캐릭터와 사랑스러운 북극곰의 이미지를 따뜻한 유머와 탁월한 세련미로 표현한 배우리씨의 그림은 글이 지닌 재미와 감동을 배가시켜줍니다. 배우리씨는 어릴 때부터 만화를 좋아했으나 엄격한 집안 분위기 때문에 다소 늦게 만화가의 길을 걷기 시작했습니다. 하지만 곧 만화가로서의 타고난 재능을 유감없이 발휘하여 승승장구하더니, 「북극곰 코다」에서는 만화적인 재미와 단순하면서도 유려한 터치로 일러스트레이터로서도 확고한 자리매김을 해냈습니다.

글을 쓴 이루리씨와 그림을 그린 배우리씨는 대학 동아리 선후배 사이로 10여 년 전부터 함께 작업하기로 약속하였는데 이번에 「북극곰 코다」로 그 약속을 지키게 되었다고 합니다. 두 작가의 우정과 북극곰과 어린이에 대한 사랑이 어우러져 아름다운 그림책이 탄생하게 된 것이지요.

What can we do to draw people's interest to the environment and polar bears? Moreover, how can we open the eyes of the children who will decide how we live in the future to the importance of the wisdom of living harmoniously with nature? The two aforementioned questions led to the creation of 「Coda The Polar Bear - The First Story, Black Noses 」. Let us take a good look at it.

In the peaceful village of polar pears where everything in sight is white except the blue sky, a hunter dressed in black, Boba, appears. Needless to say, he is after polar bears, but it is not an easy job. How can he find the white-furred polar bears in the white snowy village?

Sadly, polar bears have a weakness, and it is their big black noses. Polar bears have to hide them, and Boba has to find them.

Wandering about for some time, Boba finally finds two black noses. The two noses are those of Mommy Bear and Baby Bear Coda (Coda means "It is a nose!" in Korean). Smelling Boba's approach with her keen sense of smell, Mommy Bear quickly gets up and hugs Baby Bear Coda. Mommy Bear, forgetting to hide her own nose, is anxious about the safety of Coda and prays. Fortunately, Coda hides Mommy Bear's nose with his two paws. The two black noses disappear from the sight of Boba. Inevitably, Boba returns home empty handed. Unaware of Boba's retreat, Mommy Bear remains hugging Coda tightly, and snow falls on them as if it is a heavenly blessing.

The story begins with Boba's appearance in the village. It is fortunate for the polar bears that Boba is not as clever as he appears with his full black Arctic apparel. Boba's vocation as a hunter implies the destructive nature of our civilization and its disastrous results.

A polar bear's nose seems to be unusually big and black. As well, the Arctic appears to be very snowy and white. So it is not surprising that "The only thing visible in the Arctic region is the nose of polar bear" sounds true. A polar bear's white fur is favorable to its survival, but its nose is an evident weakness. This weakness of the polar bear is analogous to an Achilles' heel, and we can only wonder why this magnificent animal was created this way.

Boba hunts polar bears using this weakness and finally, he finds two black noses. However, Mommy Bear's self-sacrificing love saves Baby Bear Coda's life, and Coda's clever action saves Mommy Bear's life in return.

Having a black nose is a potentially fatal characteristic for polar bears, but it is an opportunity for hunters. Coda and his nose are so dear and precious to Mommy Bear, that she would not hesitate to sacrifice her life for Coda. To Coda, Mommy Bear's nose has an incredibly acute sense of smell and it is Mommy Bear's love itself that protects him from the possible threats of hunters.

Mommy Bear is anxious about the safety of Coda and forgets to hide her own nose. Fortunately, Coda hides Mommy Bear's nose with his two paws. Baby Bear Coda's clever action saves Mommy Bear's love. The following proverb may have been popular among polar bears afterwards: "When the nose smells trouble the nose must hide."

The two black noses disappear from the sight of Boba. Inevitably, Boba returns home empty handed. The fresh falling snow at the end of the story is Mother Nature's blessing to not only Coda and Mommy Bear, but also to Boba. The ending scene seems as if Mother Nature is commanding hunters and polar bears to: "Explore a means of coexistence between you that provides for all of your mutual happiness. Mother Nature loves all of you!"

After reading the book, children who formerly loved only the polar bears' white fur will now also love their black noses. Love is the process of knowing others and love will deepen as knowledge and understanding of others increases.

The story is not the only thing beautiful about 「Coda The Polar Bear - The First Story, Black Noses 」. Woory Bae's elegant and humorous drawings double our enjoyment of this lovely tale. Woory Bae was long a fan of comic art, but his career as a comic artist took off rather late in life due to the strict atmosphere of his upbringing. However, once he started his career as an artist, he strove to prove his talent and his marvelous work in 「Coda The Polar Bear - The First Story, Black Noses 」is a fine representation of his artistic talent.

The author Rury Lee and the illustrator Woory Bae are alumni of Korea University. Their friendship can be traced back to their membership of the same club at the school. 「Coda The Polar Bear - The First Story, Black Noses 」is the realization of a 10 year long promise between them. Their friendship and love of polar bears and children led to the creation of this beautiful story.
