1848년부터 2000년까지 가히 좌파의 세기라 이름붙일 만한 150년에 걸친 유럽 좌파의 역사를 치밀하게 추적하고 있는 책이다. 책은 분량만 방대한 것이 아니라 다루는 내용 역시 시기적, 지리적으로 무척 광범위하다. 여기서 말하는 좌파는 온건한 사회민주당에서부터 볼셰비키에 이르기까지, 그리고 비밀 무장투쟁 옹호론자들에서부터 1968년 이후의 신사회운동에 이르기까지 모든 세력을 아우르고 있다. 저자는 냉전의 두 진영 및 사회민주주의와 공산주의의 양극단 모두로부터 거리를 두고 냉정한 시각에서 좌파의 역사를 재구성한다. 또한 운동 진영의 승리와 패배, 혁명의 성공과 타락, 민주주의의 확립과 파시즘의 파괴 등으로 점철된 극적인 역사를 서술하면서도 결코 좌파를 낭만화하거나 이상시하지 않는다. 저자는 침착하고 냉철하게 구체적인 사건과 역사적 과정을 써나가며 신자유주의와 제3의 길이 미처 제시하지 못한 현대사회의 이상을 사회주의가 아닌 민주주의라는 틀에서의 ' 좌파’에서 찾아보고자 한다. 좌파를 큰 틀의 민주주의 나아가 모든 사회·경제·문화·개인적 차원과 동일시함으로써 20세기 마지막 30년의 사회주의의 위기로 인해 야기된 무력감을 제어할 수 있을 것이라는 견해를 제시하고 있는 책이다. Democracy in Europe has been a recent phenomenon. Only in the wake of World War II were democratic frameworks secured, and, even then, it was decades before democracy truly blanketed the continent. Neither given nor granted, democracy requires conflict, often violent confrontations, and challenges to the established political order. In Europe, Geoff Eley convincingly shows, democracy did not evolve organically out of a natural consensus, the achievement of prosperity, or the negative cement of the Cold War. Rather, it was painstakingly crafted, continually expanded, and doggedly defended by varying constellations of socialist, feminist, Communist, and other radical movements that originally blossomed in the later nineteenth century. Parties of the Left championed democracy in the revolutionary crisis after World War I, salvaged it against the threat of fascism, and renewed its growth after 1945. They organized civil societies rooted in egalitarian ideals which came to form the very fiber of Europe's current democratic traditions. The trajectories of European democracy and the history of the European Left are thus inextricably bound together. Geoff Eley has given us the first truly comprehensive history of the European Left--its successes and failures; its high watermarks and its low tides; its accomplishments, insufficiencies, and excesses; and, most importantly, its formative, lasting influence on the European political landscape. At a time when the Left's influence and legitimacy are frequently called into question, Forging Democracy passionately upholds its vital contribution.

저자 : 제프 일리 Geoff Eley

미시건대학 칼 포트 석좌교수Karl Pohrt Distinguished University Professor. 『독일 우파의 개조: 비스마르크 이후의 급진 민족주의와 정치 변화Reshaping the German Right: Radical Nationalism and Political Change』를 비롯하여 영국사와 독일사에 관한 여러 권의 책을 저술, 편집했다. 우리말로는 『독일 역사학의 신화 깨뜨리기』(데이비드 블랙번과 공저, 푸른역사, 2007)가 소개된 바 있다.

Geoff Eley is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. He is the author and editor of many books on British and German history, including Reshaping the German Right: Radical Nationalism and Political Change after Bismarck.
