오스트레일리아 시드니에서 태어났다. 1981년 시드니 대학에서 철학 전공으로 박사학위를 받았다. 미국 뉴욕 주립 대학교 비교문학과 교수를 역임했으며, 뉴저지 럿저 대학교에서 여성학을 가르쳤다. 현재 듀크 대학교 여성학 교수로 재직 중이다. 라캉, 데리다, 푸코, 들뢰즈 등의 프랑스 철학자들과 이리가레, 크리스테바, 르 되프 등의 프랑스 페미니즘 이론을 철학적으로 해석하고 확장하는 작업을 진행해 온 것으로 알려져 있다. 주로 육체성의 문제를 과학과 예술 등과 연결해 작업해 왔다.
