저자 한승주는 현재 고려대학교 명예교수이자 아산정책연구원 이사장이다. 1940년 서울에서 태어나 50여 년간 한결같이 외교의 길을 걸었다. 1970년부터 학계에 몸담아 온 그는 외무부 장관 (1993-1994), 주미 대사 (2003-2005)를 역임한 대한민국 ‘학자 외교관’이다. 서울대 외교학과 졸업 후 미국 UC 버클리에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 뉴욕 시립대에서 8년간 부교수로 재직한 후, 귀국하여 1978년부터 고려대 정치외교학과 교수로서 제자들을 양성하였다. 컬럼비아대 및 스탠포드대 초빙교수, 록펠러형제기금 명예연구원을 역임하였으며, UN 사무총장 특별대표 (사

한승주와 격동의 한국 현대사
그의 개인사는 우리의 현대사와 무관할 수 없었다. 그는 초등학교 때는 6·25전쟁, 대학교 때는 4·19혁명 등 격동의 현장에서 죽을 고비를 넘겼다. 김영삼 정부의 초대 외무부 장관(1993년)으로, 노무현 정부의 초대 주미 대사(2003년)로 임명되어 각각 22개월간 격변의 외교 현장을 누비기도 했다. 그의 회고록이 의미를 갖는 이유다. 요즘에는 우리나라에도 영어를 잘하는 사람이 많다고 하지만 영어로 글을 쓰고 책까지 내는 경우는 여전히 매우 드물다. 저자는 여러 권의 영문 저서를 발간한 바 있으며, 특히 10년 동안 뉴스위크 고정 칼럼니스트로 활약할 정도로 고급 영어를 구사하는 것으로 널리 알려져 있다. 품격 있는 영어 표현의 멋과 맛을 느끼고 배우는 것은 이 책이 제공하는 덤이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 외국인 독자는 물론 한국어가 서툰 우리 재외교포 2세, 3세, 4세들이 한국을 좀 더 깊이 이해하는 데 도움이 되기를 바라는 마음에서 이 책을 썼다고 저자는 말한다. 영문판과 한글판, 무엇이 다른가 2017년에 저자가 펴낸 한글판 회고록 [외교의 길]의 영문판이지만, 한글판의 축자 번역은 아니다. 좀 더 간결하게 정리했으며, 한국 문화에 익숙지 않은 독자를 위해 필요한 부분에는 상세한 배경 설명도 덧붙였다. [On the Brink]는 저자 개인은 물론, 한국이라는 나라와 우리 민족, 현재와 미래 한국 외교의 도전과 기회를 이해하는 데 필수적인 책이다. |
