World Classic reading Book (세계 고전문학 리딩북) 1) 프랑스 원작을 영문판으로 번역! 2) <캉디드>출간 당시 금서 지정(해금된 프랑스 풍자소설) 3) 프랑스의 최고의 문학가 '볼테르'작가 작품! 캉디드[편집] Candide (1759) 사상소설. 볼테르 저. 익명으로 발표하여 곧 금서처분을 받았다. 부제(副題)는 이다. 불행한 체험을 계속하면서 사회의 불합리와 비참한 현실을 목격해 온 작자가 “무릇 모든 것은 최선의 상태에 있다”라고 한 라이프니츠의 사상과 이 세상에 신의 은총이 있다고 하는 교회를 비판 공격한 것이다. 이름과 같이 극히 순진한 캉디드는 팡그로스 선생의 낙천적인 사상을 마음 깊이 신봉하나 조카인 퀴네공드를 사랑한 때문에 백부의 성에서 쫓겨난다. 무의미한 전쟁·대(大)지진·종교재판에 의한 화형·살인·몹쓸 병마 등, 이상향 엘도라도를 제외한 어느 곳에서나 스승의 가르침과는 반대되는 현실과 부딪힌다. 그러나 그는 절망하지 않고 “다만 정원(庭園)을 갈지 않으면 안 된다”란 최후의 말이 나타내는 바와 같이 인간에게 행동해야 한다는 것을, 그리고 우리 사회는 개선할 여지가 있다는 사실을 가르쳐 주고 있다. 작자의 쓰디쓴 유머가 빠른 템포의 간결한 명문이 충만한 풍자문학의 최고 걸작의 하나이다.
