저자 : 아이라 M. 라피두스 (Ira M. Lapidus)
미국 뉴욕 브루클린의 러시아계 이민자 가정에서 태어났다. 고등학교 시절 역사 선생님의 권유로 하버드 대학에 진학하여 중동과 이슬람의 역사를 전공하게 되었다. 1958년에 학부를 졸업하고, 1964년에 박사학위(Ph.D)를 받았다. 캘리포니아 버클리 대학 역사학과에서 오랫동안 학생들을 가르쳤으며, 같은 대학 내 중동학센터 초대 소장을 역임했다. 오늘날 가장 탁월한 이슬람 역사학자로 평가받고 있다. 현재는 버클리 대학 역사학과 명예교수이다. 저명한 사진가이자 여행가이기도 하다. 지은 책으로는 대표작인 이 책 외에 Islam, Politics, and Social Movements(공편, 1988), Contemporary Islamic Movements in Historical Perspective(1984) 등이 있다.
