‘질병 세균설’에서 ‘피어볼라’까지 현대인의 삶을 만든 세균의 역사 ‘회칠한 무덤’ ‘장티푸스 메리’ ‘병균 사회주의’ 등 우리가 잊어버린 공중보건의 풍경 세균과 역사, 전혀 어울릴 것 같지 않은 한 쌍이다. 세균은 의학이나 과학에서나 다룰 법한 주제로 느껴진다는 점에서이다. 그런데 사실 우리의 일상을 되돌아보면 세균과 무관한 행위가 거의 없다. 아침에 눈뜨자마자 시작되는 일상적인 행위들, 샤워, 양치질, 청소, 설거지나 빨래 등이 그렇고, 집 밖에서 활동한 뒤에는 반드시 옷을 털고 손과 발을 씻는 등의 행위가 그러하며, 감기나 독감 등의 유행병이 돌 때는 이들 바이러스에 감염되지 않기 위해 더 안간힘을 쓰는 것도 이러한 맥락 속에 있다. 이러한 청결 담론이 서양에 본격적으로 퍼지기 시작한 것은 ‘세균’의 존재를 믿으면서부터였다. 『세균의 복음―1870~1930년 미국 공중보건의 역사The Gospel of Germs: Men, Women, and the Microbe in American Life』는 19세기 중반 이후 미국 사회에 거의 종교와 비견될 정도로 지대한 영향을 미친 세균의 역사를 다루고 있다. 비록 이 책이 19세기와 20세기 초반 미국 사회에 국한되어 있기는 하지만, 오늘날 한국 사회의 화두가 되고 있는 미세먼지, 가습기 살균제, 전염병의 공포 등을 떠올려 본다면 이 책은 현재의 한국 사회에 여전히 유효한 메시지를 던지고 있다. 균을 피하는 행위는 19세기 중반에 시작되었다. 그런데 그러한 균 기피 행위는 오늘날까지 거의 대부분 지속되고 있다. 이는 매우 놀라운 사실이다. 예를 들어 호텔 화장실에 처음 사용되기 시작한 두루마리 휴지, 매트리스와 침구를 감싼 하얀 천, 일회용 위생용품 등이나, 의사나 위생사의 하얀 가운과 위생 장갑, 포장제, 모든 곳에(심지어 입 속에도) 사용하는 살균제 등은 오늘날에도 미국뿐만 아니라 거의 전 세계에서 보편적으로 사용하고 있다. 세균이 존재한다는 믿음과 청결의 실천을 통해 사람들이 질병으로부터 완전히 벗어난 것은 아니었다. 1960년대 말, 미국 정부는 자신만만하게 세균을 완전히 정복했고, 이제 인간은 감염병으로부터 완전히 해방되었다고 선언했다. 하지만 불과 20년이 지나지 않아 이전과는 다른 새로운 질병인 에이즈가 발병했다. 지은이 톰스Nancy Tomes에 따르면 확실한 치료제가 없는 새로운 질병이 나타나자 이전 세대가 보였던 세균에 대한 맹신, 즉 복음이 되살아났다. 그리고 그 복음은 히스테리를 낳으면서, 성적·인종적인 차별과 배제의 기제가 되었다. And yet, as Nancy Tomes reminds us in her absorbing book, this is really nothing new. A remarkable work of medical and cultural history, The Gospel of Germs takes us back to the first great "germ panic" in American history, which peaked in the early 1900s, to explore the origins of our modern disease consciousness. Little more than a hundred years ago, ordinary Americans had no idea that many deadly ailments were the work of microorganisms, let alone that their own behavior spread such diseases. The Gospel of Germs shows how the revolutionary findings of late nineteenth-century bacteriology made their way from the laboratory to the lavatory and kitchen, with public health reformers spreading the word and women taking up the battle on the domestic front. Drawing on a wealth of advice books, patent applications, advertisements, and oral histories, Tomes traces the new awareness of the microbe as it radiated outward from middle-class homes into the world of American business and crossed the lines of class, gender, ethnicity, and race. Just as we take some of the weapons in this germ war for granted--fixtures as familiar as the white porcelain toilet, the window screen, the refrigerator, and the vacuum cleaner--so we rarely think of the drastic measures deployed against disease in the dangerous old days before antibiotics. But, as Tomes notes, many of the hygiene rules first popularized in those days remain the foundation of infectious disease control today. Her work offers a timely look into the history of our long-standing obsession with germs, its impact on twentieth-century culture and society, and its troubling new relevance to our own lives.
