1966년 미국 콜로라도주 볼더에서 태어나 자랐다. 캘리포니아 대학교에서 공부한 후 컬럼비아 대학교에서 저널리즘으로 석사 학위를 받았다. 2000년부터 〈뉴욕타임스〉에서 기자로 일하기 시작했고 면역 항암제, 전자 담배, 기술 남용이 뇌와 행동에 미치는 영향 같은 주제로 과학, 기술, 비즈니스 등의 분야에서 다양한 기사를 써 왔다. 2010년에 운전 중 휴대 전화, 컴퓨터 등 전자 기기 사용이 얼마나 위험할 수 있는지 밝힌 기획 연재 기사로 퓰리처 상 국내 보도 부문 상을 받았다. 이 기사를 토대로 2014년에 발표한 논픽션 《산만한 운전》(A Deadly Wandering)은 〈뉴욕타임스〉 베스트셀러가 되었고 〈샌프란시스코 크로니클〉, 〈크리스천 사이언스 모니터〉, 《커커스 리뷰》, 아마존 등에서 ‘올해의 책’으로 선정되었다. 그는 NPR, PBS 등의 다양한 텔레비전과 라디오 프로그램에 출연하여 뇌과학, 면역, 첨단 기술 등을 주제로 대중 강연을 하고 있다. 신작 《우아한 방어》는 서로 다른 면역계 장애를 겪고 있는 네 사람을 생생하게 인터뷰하여 첨단 면역학의 지평을 보여 주는 책으로, 특유의 꼼꼼한 취재력과 매력적인 스토리텔링이 돋보이는 작품이다. 현재 신경과 의사인 아내 메러디스, 두 자녀와 함께 샌프란시스코에 살고 있다.
