FBI 요원 및 콴티코의 FBI 아카데미 교수를 지냈다. 1970년 FBI의 일원이 되었다. 인질 협상팀을 거쳐 행동과학부로 전보되었다. 행동과학부는 훗날 저자가 창설한 수사지원부의 전신이기도 하다. 사건 현장을 바탕으로 범인의 인종과 성별, 나이, 직업, 성장배경과 성격 등을 도출해내는 ‘프로파일링 기법’을 창시하였다. 저자의 회고록이자 대표작인 『마인드헌터』가 데이비드 핀처 감독의 연출로 영상화되어 넷플릭스에서 방영 중이다. 그 외의 저서로 『범죄동기The Anatomy of Motive』 『범죄 분류 교본Crime Classifi
