미국 앨라배마주 오번대학 역사학과의 명예교수. 항공우주산업과 과학기술의 역사 전문가로서 초창기 항공우주공학부터 NASA(미국항공우주국)의 역사를 연구했고, 달 착륙과 우주왕복선 계획 등의 항공우주 분야에 관한 다양한 주제를 다루는 십여 권의 저서와 수많은 논문들을 발표했다. 그 중 이 책 『퍼스트맨』은 닐 암스트롱의 공식 전기로 유일하게 인정 받은 책이다. 유니버설 스튜디오는 이 책을 원작으로 동명영화를 만들어 국내에서도 2018년 10월에 개봉한다. 라이언 고슬링이 닐 암스트롱 역할을 맡았고, 영화 [라라랜드]로 아카데미 감독상을 받은 데이미언 셔젤이 연출했다.
