저자 마를린 주크는 미국의 진화생물학자이자 동물의 행동을 연구하는 생태학자이다. 2012년 미네소타 대학교로 옮기기 전까지 리버사이드 캘리포니아 대학교에서 재직했다. 어려서부터 곤충에 관심이 많던 그녀는 생물학 학사 취득 후 미시간 대학교에서 ‘성 선택과 배우자 결정’에 관한 연구로 박사 학위를 받았다. 기생충이 동물의 성 행동 진화에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 주로 연구했으며 성 선택을(Sexual Selection) 비롯하여 성적 행동에 미친 기생충의 역할에 관한 책을 여러 권 썼다.
