Daniel Markovits

예일대학교 수학과를 졸업하고, 런던 정경대학교에서 경제학 석사, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 철학 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 예일대 로스쿨 교수이자 예일대 사법연구소 소장으로 활동 중이다. 그는 오랫동안 경제적 불평등에 대해 관심을 갖고 ‘진정한 평등’을 위한 다양한 제안을 제시해왔다. 미국 법조계와 학계에서 천재 중의 천재로 꼽히는 마코비츠는 엘리트 코스를 걸어온 자기 자신을 비롯해 오직 엘리트에만 유리한 쪽으로 사회가 ‘조작’되고 있다는 과감한 주장을 펼친다. 불평등 문제의 원인은 능력대로 공정하게 보상받는다는 ‘능력주의(meritocracy)’ 그 자체이며, 이는 거짓이라는 것이다.
