After reading it, I consider 『Freewater』 to be the best book among Newbery-award winners. The novel is about the historical event of the 'maroon community,' which was formed by runaway slaves (source: https://slaveryandremembrance.org/articles/article/?id=A0060). The history depicted the cruelty of their lives, and the book accurately portrays this. Despite the horrors of their lives, the characters in the novel strive to find their own path. The author, Amina Luqman-Dawson, describes it beautifully. As readers, we get a glimpse of how miserable their lives were from a children's perspective, but there is always a sense of hope.
Homer's mother tries to escape with her children to the north or somewhere far from the Southerland, but she gets caught by Stokes. Luckily, the children were able to run away to a safe place. Homer and Ada eventually find refuge in Freewater, but they still miss their mother dearly.
