Khaled Khalifa was born in 1964 near Aleppo, Syria, the fifth of thirteen siblings. He studied law at Aleppo University and participated in the foundation of Aleph magazine, which was closed down a few months later by Syrian censors. Active in the arts scene in Damascus, where he lives, Khalifa is a renowned writer of screenplays and novels. His novel No Knives in the Kitchens of This City was awarded the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature and was a finalist for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. His novel Death Is Hard Work was a finalist for the National Book Award.

Leri Price is the translator of Khaled Khalifa’s Death Is Hard Work, In Praise of Hatred, and No Knives in the Kitchens of This City, as well as literature from Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.
