줄거리

솔로몬 노섭은 1808년 뉴욕에서 태어났으며 세 아이를 둔 가장이자 성실한 남편이었다. 그는 바이올린 연주자로 일하는 자유인이었다. 솔로몬 부부는 쉬지 않고 열심히 일해서, 지금은 가난하지만 언젠가는 풍족하게 살 수 있다는 희망을 가지고 살고 있었다. 그러던 중 1841년, 일거리를 소개해 주겠다는 두 노예 상인의 꾐에 속아 넘어가서 길을 떠났다가 납치를 당해 하루아침에 노예 신세로 전락했다. 제임스 버치라는 악명 높은 노예 상인에게 잡혀 있던 솔로몬은 배에 태워졌고 머나먼 남부의 뉴올리언스 주로 팔려 간다.
플랫이란 이름을 단 노섭은 처음에는 다행히도 루이지애나 주에 사는 사람 좋은 목사 윌리엄 포드에게 팔렸다. 그러나 주인의 재정 상태가 악화되자 존 티비츠라는 악인에게 넘겨지면서 끔찍한 고난이 시작된다. 이유 없이 채찍질을 당하고, 목에 올가미를 매게 되기도 하며 주인이 광분하여 휘두르는 도끼질을 피해서 달아나다가 살모사가 도사리는 죽음의 습지를 헤매기도 한다. 간신히 살아나지만 또다시 잔인한 술주정뱅이 에드윈 엡스에게 팔려 간다. 주인은 가축이나 먹을 법한 음식을 노섭에게 준다. 노섭은 거친 담요 한 장을 두른 채 자야 했고 동틀 무렵부터 자기 전까지 혹독한 노동을 했다. 그런 생활이 12년간이나 이어진다. 그러다가 1853년, 양심적인 한 백인의 도움으로 간신히 그 끔찍한 생활에서 벗어난다.
