Listening to her on the phone, Hong remembered Ok-hwa’s eyes. When Ok-hwa had been interrogated about the credit at the supermarket, her debt to the noodle shop, or the money that had disappeared from the desk in the living room, she had said, unfazed, “Oh, that? That’s right. I did that.” The look in Ok-hwa’s eyes was so righteous that they almost made Hong feel superficial and guilty. Between her husband’s displeasure and Ok-hwa’s reproach toward what she perceived as Hong’s pettiness, Hong was getting terribly stressed. Quite naturally, her annoyance and hatred toward Ok-hwa were growing larger than her sympathy for and understanding of her. Ok-hwa should have perceived this from Hong’s attitude.
