Collaboration of student designers from East and West for solving wicked urban problems
The students from the Royal College of Art and KAIST have challenged the social problems of metropolises through the GoGlobal project. The students’ team projects expanded upon the wide area including product, system, experience, and service design. As a result of cross-cultural collaboration, various solutions including immediately implementable proposals as well as items that may be feasible in the near future have been designed. This book introduces the participants’ group design process and results in detail.

The GoGlobal design collaboration is focused on creating social city software solutions. Essentially these are design ecologies based on a mixture of cloud, online, physical and experiential design elements that are fused into one creative proposition. In many ways these methods are very similar to those required by struggling corporate manufacturers and it will be interesting to see if this becomes the case or even if we will see these two areas converging into a single social design ecology domain.

Plato, the Classic Greek philosopher, once said of Athens “This City is what it is because our citizens are what they are”. Since that day our cities have become a lot more complex. They are now intricate networks of people, communications, power, services, living spaces, recreation and working zones. How do the people, the true core of the city make, inform and shape the city around them? How do they influence and connect with the city they live in? It was these questions that seeded the initial thinking to begin this project, create the associated design work and create this publication. It is with great pleasure that I introduce this book, the result of the hard effort of many people, including the staff and students involved in the collaboration between the Industrial Design Department at KAIST and the Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) programme at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. Both programmes, ID KAIST and IDE share many similar attributes. They are cutting-edge product design disciplines in which students work at the centre of complex, demanding projects with an emphasis on prototyping and proving propositions. The programmes mix a wide range of design skills and thinking into play - industrial design techniques, manufacturing, engineering, technology, design research, user centred design and sustainability. This shared approach has led to a smooth weaving together of the different cultures, experiences and backgrounds of the involved team members to produce a delightful range of ideas and propositions for new social city experiences for Seoul. Difference brings difference. The team’s hard work would not have produced such great work however without the additional and generous support of KIDP, The British Council, Seoul Design Foundation and MKC ? I would like to finally extend my gratitude to these organisations and all the co-creators for their efforts and support to make it happen.
