한국외국어대학교 영미문학문화학과 교수. 시를 통과한 느낌과 사유를 나누기 위해 매일 쓰고 매일 걷는다. 때로 말이 사람을 살리기도 한다는 것과 시가 그 말의 뿌리가 될 수 있다는 것을 믿으며 믿음의 실천을 궁구하는 공부 길을 걷는 중이다. 산문집 『다시 시작하는 경이로운 순간들: 글이 태어나는 시간』, 『딸기 따러 가자: 고립과 불안을 견디게 할 지혜의 말』 등을 출간했다.
우리 시를 영어로 알리는 일과 영미시를 우리말로 옮겨 알리는 일에도 정성을 쏟고 있다. 앤 섹스턴의 『밤엔 더 용감하지』, 윌리엄 카를로스 윌리엄스의 『패터슨』, 『꽃의 연약함이 공간을 관통한다』, 크리스티나 로세티의 『고블린 도깨비 시장』, 루이즈 글릭의 『야생 붓꽃』, 『신실하고 고결한 밤』 등을 한국어로 번역했고, 황인찬의 『구관조 씻기기(Washing a Myna)』, 심보선의 『슬픔이 없는 십오 초(Fifteen Seconds Without Sorrow)』(2016), 이성복의 『아 입이 없는 것들(Ah, Mouthless Things)』(2017), 강은교의 『바리연가집(Bari’s Love Song)』(2019) 등을 영어로 옮겼다. 힘들고 고적한 삶의 길에 세계의 시가 더 많은 독자들에게 나침반이 되고 벗이 되고 힘이 되기를 바란다.
Professor in the Department of English Literature and Culture at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul, Korea, specializes in twentieth-century American poetry, cultural poetics, and translation. After getting her Ph. D at Poetics Program, University at Buffalo in 2005, she has published articles, translations, poems, and reviews in various journals. She has translated over 30 volumes of poetry and published six collections of essays on poetry and contemporary culture. Currently, she is Dean of the Administrative Affairs of the Graduate Schools, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and Editor-in-chief, The Journal of English Language and Literature.
