대구교육대학교를 졸업하여, 단국대학교 대학원 교육학과에서 석사 및 박사학위릏 취득하였다. 현재 광주여자대학교 상담심리학과 교수로 재직 중이며, 학부 학과장, 교육대학원 및 일반대학원 주임교수를 겸하고 있다. 사랑의 전화, 아하!청소년 성문화센터, 심향상담 연구소 등에서 상담원으로 일하였으며, 관주여자대학교 학생생활상담 센터장을 역임하였다. 최근에는 신경과학과 상담 실제를 연결짓는 상담 이론서인 『상담 이론과 실제: 다문화 관점의 통합적 접근』을 공역자들과 함께 번역 출판 함으로써 상담자들이 뇌와 마음의 연결고리에 대한 이해를 할 수 있게 도우려는 노력을 하고 있다.
