All too frequently, leadership is reduced to a simple dichotomy: the strong versus the weak. Yet, there are myriad ways to exercise effective political leadership--as well as different ways to fail. We blame our leaders for economic downfalls and praise them for vital social reforms, but rarely do we question what makes some leaders successful while others falter. In this magisterial and wide-ranging survey of political leadership over the past hundred years, renowned Oxford politics professor Archie Brown challenges the widespread belief that strong leaders--meaning those who dominate their colleagues and the policy-making process--are the most successful and admirable. In reality, only a minority of political leaders will truly make a lasting difference. Though we tend to dismiss more collegial styles of leadership as weak, it is often the most cooperative leaders who have the greatest impact. Drawing on extensive research and decades of political analysis and experience, Brown illuminates the achievements, failures and foibles of a broad array of twentieth century politicians. 영국 정치학자이자 역사학자로, 옥스퍼드대학 정치학 명예교수 겸 옥스퍼드대학 세인트앤터니스칼리지의 명예 펠로우이다. 1991년부터 영국학사원British Academy 회원이며, 2003년 미국예술과학아카데미American Academy of Arts and Sciences 명예 회원으로 선출되었다. 소련과 공산주의 정치, 냉전, 정치 리더십에 관해 폭넓게 저술했다. 앞서 출간된 두 권의 저서 『고르바초프 팩터The Gorbachev Factor』(1996)와 『공산주의의 흥망The Rise and Fall of Communism』(2009)으로 영국정치연구학회가 매년 정치학 분야
