경제 질서의 재편을 예고하는 슘페터의 단서 〈이코노미스트〉 경제 전문 칼럼니스트 에이드리언 울드리지가 5년간 포착한 혼란과 파괴의 단서 2016년 〈이코노미스트〉, 경제학자 슘페터를 소환하다 연이은 금융대란과 거대 기업들의 몰락이 자본주의 동력에 대한 회의를 낳을 무렵, 세계적 경제전문지〈이코노미스트〉는 야심찬 프로젝트를 기획한다. 바로 ‘슘페터’ 칼럼이다. 극심한 경제 기후의 실상을 파헤쳐 미래 향방의 단서를 찾고 개인·기업·정부가 어떻게 적응의 수준이 아닌 성공적인 돌파를 할 수 있는지에 대한 탐구를 시작한 것이다. 왜 지금 ‘슘페터’인가? 경제학자 조지프 슘페터Joseph Schumpeter(1883~1950)는 케인스와 더불어 경제학의 양대 산맥으로 평가받는다. 케인스는 수요 측면에서 접근해 경기침체의 해법으로 정부의 재정 지출을 내놓았다. 반면 슘페터는 공급 측면에 눈을 돌려 ‘기업가’야말로 불황을 깨는 주체며 기업가의 혁신적 사고와 도전이야말로 자본주의의 핵심이라고 주장했다. 그가 주창한 ‘창조적 파괴creative destruction’란 기업가의 혁신을 통해 기존의 경제 질서가 무너지고 새로운 경제 패러다임이 탄생하는 과정이 무한히 반복됨을 뜻한다. 그렇다면〈이코노미스트〉가 슘페터와 슘페터가 강조한 기업가정신, 창조적 파괴에 주목한 이유 또한 자명하다. 큰 그림으로 보면 지금의 대혼란은 거대한 경기순환 과정의 일부일 뿐이며 기업가의 부단한 창조적 파괴만이 새로운 활로를 열 수 있다는 메시지를 다시금 전하기 위해서다. 아울러 슘페터의 관점을 빌어 경제 흐름의 단서를 읽고 미래의 밑그림을 제시하고자 한 의도도 담겨 있다. 이 책은 〈이코노미스트〉경제 전문 편집장인 에이드리언 울드리지가 2009년부터 2014년까지 5년간 포착한 경제 변화의 단서를 담았다. 여기에는 큰 변화를 예고하는 작은 변화들과 이를 감지한 기업과 정부 그리고 개인의 기민한 대응과 전략, 반걸음 앞선 미래의 스케치가 담겨 있다. "The Great Disruption" is a collection drawn from Adrian Wooldridge's influential Schumpeter columns in "The Economist" addressing the causes and profound consequences of the unprecedented disruption of business over the past five years. The Great Disruption has many causes. The internet is spreading faster than any previous technology. Emerging markets are challenging the west s dominance of innovation as well as manufacturing. Clever management techniques such as frugal innovation are forcing companies to rethink pricing. Robots are advancing from the factory floor into the service sector. But these developments are all combining together to shake business lifeand indeed life in generalto its foundations. The Great Disruption is producing a new class of winners, many of whom are still unfamiliar: Asian has more female billionaires and CEOs than Europe, for example. It is also producing a growing class of losers: old-fashioned universities that want to continue to operate in the world of talk and chalk; companies that refuse to acknowledge that competition is now at warp speed; and business people who think that we still live in the world of company man. It is forcing everybody to adapt or die: workers realise that they will have to jump from job to joband indeed from career to careerand institutions realise that they need to remain adaptable and flexible. The Great Disruption is all the more testing because it coincides with the Great Stagnation. The financial crisis has not only reduced most people s living standards in the west. It has also revealed that the boom years of 2000-20007 were built on credit: individuals and governments were borrowing money to pay for lifestyles that no longer had any real justification. Employees are having to cope with unprecedented change at a time when they are also seeing their incomes flat or declining. Companies are having to respond to revolutionary innovations even as they are seeing their overall markets contract. We are all having to run faster in order to stay in the same place. This book begins with a long introduction explaining the thesis of the book and setting it in a broad historical context. It will also introduce readers to Joseph Schumpeter and explain why his ideas about creative destruction are particularly valuable today.
