마크 트웨인은 고전을 사람들이 떠받들지만 읽지는 않는 책이라고 했다. 위대한 이름들은 마음 한 켠 동경의 대상이 되지만 선뜻 그 무게를 감당할 용기를 내기는 쉽지 않다. 그러나 호메로스, 플라톤과 같은 고대 그리스의 작가들부터 단테, 제인 오스틴, 괴테, 발자크, 도스토예프스키, 니체, 오스카 와일드에 이르기까지 시대와 국가를 아우르는 쟁쟁한 이름들을 한번에 만나 볼 수 있다면 어떨까?
올해로 80주년을 맞은 영국의 펭귄 출판사에서는 이러한 독자들의 소망을 담아 문고판 80권이 담긴 ‘작은 고전’ 세트를 출간했다. 무게는 가볍지만 내용은 알차게 보카치오의 데카메론, 단테의 신곡처럼 잘 알려진 작품의 주요 챕터들을 발췌해오거나 에드가 앨런 포의 단편과 같이 짧은 텍스트들을 실어 각 권 마다 나름의 완성도를 주고자 했다. 또한 상대적으로 이름만 들어보았거나 잘 모르기 때문에 오히려 알고 싶은 욕망을 불러 일으키는 작가와 작품들도 포함하였다. 문고판인 만큼 가격도 착하다. 각 권 2파운드, 한화로는 3,600원 정도인데 물가 차이를 감안한다면 체감상으로는 2~3천원 정도로 느껴진다. 펭귄 클래식 스타일의 흑백 표지는 멋스럽고, 핸드폰 보다도 가벼워 들고 다니기에도 부담스럽지 않다. 크기는 손바닥 보다 조금 크고 각 권은 60 쪽이 채 되지 않는다. 클래식 시리즈로 유명한 펭귄이라서 가능한 일일까? 현대에도 배울 점이 많은 논어, 지금도 반복되는 역사인 사기의 일부를 발췌하고 다산 정약용 선생님의 향기로운 글과 혁명의 김수영 시인, 따뜻한 박완서 선생님을 한번에 만날 수 있는, 가볍지만 결코 가볍지 않은 합리적인 가격의 세트가 국내에서도 나올 수 있지 않을까? 개인적으로는 어렸을 적에 읽었던 안데르센 동화가 그때도 씁쓸하고 잔인한 매력이 있었지만 지금은 그마저도 순수한 슬픔이나 기쁨이기 보다 세월이 묻어 짠하고 복잡한 기분이 들어 시간의 흐름을 실감하였다. 금화를 주면서 부싯돌만 갖다 달랬더니 목을 치다니, 부모님의 원수와 결혼을 하고도 여왕이 되는 것을 기뻐하다니, 유년시절의 기억에 약간은 금이 가는 듯한 기분이 들었다. 한편으로는 이토록 다양한 논쟁이 가능한 텍스트라는 것에 놀랐다. 모차르트와 아버지가 주고 받은 서신집에서는 천재적이고 아름다운 음악 너머 서투르고 불완전한 인간의 목소리가 들린다. 아버지의 아들에 대한 사랑과 걱정, 그 위에 얹혀진 무거운 현실은 그들이 살아있었음을 새삼스레 깨닫게 해준다. 카톡과 이메일이 없던 시절 여비가 100만원은 남아야 할 텐데 왜 30만원 밖에 안 남았느냐, 연주 여행은 부유한 귀족과 상인들이 있는 큰 도시로 갈 것이며, 돈이 떨어지면 누구에게 차용증을 발급해 달라고 요청하려무나 하는 편지는 생생하다 못해 아프기까지 하다. 바로 옆에서 피를 흘리듯이. 고전의 매력은 이런 것이 아닐까? 수 세대를 거쳐오면서도 변하지 않는 고통과 기쁨을 현대에 되살려 감흥과 위로를 공유하는 것 말이다. |
