미국 카네기멜런대학교의 사회경제학 교수이다. 콜로라도대학교에서 경제학과 금융을 공부했으며, 미시간대학교에서 경제학으로 박사학위를 받았다. 주요 연구 분야로는 경제학과 게임이론, 복잡계 적응시스템이론, 경매시장, 협력, 실험경제학 등이다. 1989년부터 2002년까지 미국 산타페연구소의 외부 교수를 지냈으며, 2003년 연구교수를 지냈다.
