Discovering the Future of Public Libraries in the Heart of the City The visionary initiative of Oh Ji-eun, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Library, who has spent more than three decades working in public libraries, is now reaching readers around the world. The English edition of The Answer Is the Book-Reading Citizen is now available. This edition introduces global readers to the experience and achievements of the Seoul Outdoor Library, an innovative public library initiative from Korea. 서울도서관장·공공도서관협의회장·한국도서관협회 부회장.
1994년 성동구청 자료실 사서로 도서관계에 첫 발을 내디딘 이후 30년 넘게 공공도서관 발전을 위해 헌신해온 현장 전문가다. 광진정보도서관장으로 재직하며 광진구립도서관을 총괄했던 시절, 그는 다양한 혁신적 시도를 통해 전국도서관운영평가에서 대통령상을 3회나 수상하는 성과를 거두었다. 이러한 현장 경험을 바탕으로 보다 체계적인 도서관 시스템과 정책 수립을 목표로 광역대표도서관인 서울도서관장에 도전했고, 2022년 서울도서관 제3대 관장으로 취임했다.

취임 이후 오지은 관장은 공공도서관의 새로운 가능성을 모색하며 다양한 혁신 정책을 추진하고 있다. 현재 공공도서관협의회장과 한국도서관협회 부회장을 겸임하며 도서관계 전체의 발전을 이끌고 있는 그의 대표적인 성과는 서울야외도서관 프로젝트다. 이 프로젝트는 도서관 서비스 혁신의 상징적 사례로 평가받으며, 2023년 대한민국 최초로 국제도서관협회연맹(IFLA) 녹색도서관상을 수상했고, 이어 2024년에는 국제도서관협회연맹(IFLA) 마케팅상을 연속 수상하는 쾌거를 이뤘다. 또한 시민들이 직접 선정하는 ‘서울시 10대 뉴스’에 매년 상위권으로 선정되며 국내외적으로 큰 주목을 받고 있다. 2025년에는 혁신의 범위를 더욱 확장하여 만 명이 가입한 회원제 공공북클럽 ‘힙독클럽’을 출범했다. 오지은 관장은 앞으로도 공공도서관이 지속가능한 커뮤니티 플랫폼으로 자리잡을 수 있도록 다양한 실험을 통해 도서관 혁신을 이어갈 예정이다.
