Re-Born Korea is a series that reintroduces significant works from the Academy of Korean Studies to a global readership, bringing influential scholarship into conversation with contemporary questions. This inaugural volume begins with a timely yet enduring question: Why Korean Studies, and why now?<br/>Although Korean Studies is commonly understood as the study of Korea, its origins were anything but straightforward. Emerging at the intersection of colonial systems of knowledge and efforts to reclaim Korean history and identity, the field evolved through continuing debates over universalism and particularism, tradition and modernity, and nationalism and global perspectives.<br/>Remapping Korean Studies traces the formation and development of Korean Studies from the modern transition through the colonial and post-liberation periods, showing how the field has responded to changing historical and intellectual contexts. 서울대학교 사회학과를 거쳐 동 대학원 사회학과에서 박사학위를 받았으며, 덕성여대 교수, 미국의 뉴욕주립대 Binghamton와 프랑스의 파리 인간과학연구소Maison des Sciences de L'Homme에서 후기박사과정, 일본 동경대학 경제학부 객원연구원, 미국 버클리대학, 워싱턴대학 교류교수 등을 역임했다. 현재 한국학중앙연구원 사회과학부 교수로 재직 중이다. 한국사회사와 사회사상, 역사사회학, 동아시아론 등에 관심이 있으며, 주요 저서로 《일제하 노동운동사》(1992), 《이재유연구》(1993), 《지역연구의 역사와 이론》(1998), 《한국의 근대와 근대성》(2003), 《동아시아의 민족이산과 도시: 20세기 전반기 만주의 조선인》(공저, 2004), 《한국노동운동사 2, 일제하의 노동운동: 1920-1945》(2004), 《한국 근대 노동사와 노동운동》(2004), 《여성의 근대, 근대의 여성》(2004), Pioneers of Korean Studies(편, 2004), 《이재유, 나의 시대 나의 혁명》(2007), 《제국의 시대와 동아시아 연대》(2011) 등이 있다.
