미국의 39대 대통령이다. 1924년 조지아 주 플레인스에서 태어났다. 백악관을 떠난 후 아내 로잘린과 함께 국제적 분쟁과 갈등을 예방하고 해결하기 위해 노력하고 자유와 민주주의를 널리 알리는 비정부 단체인 카터 센터를 애틀랜타에 설립하였다. 베스트셀러에 오른 회고록인『해뜨기 전 한 시간』과 『나이 드는 것의 미덕』을 포함해 수많은 책을 집필한 작가이기도 한 그는 2002년 노벨평화상을 수상하였다.
