This book critically examines British media representations of China, focusing on the construction of the ‘China threat’ narrative in three British television documentaries: The Chinese Are Coming (BBC Two, 26 February 2011), China: Triumph and Turmoil (Channel Four, 12 March 2012), and Civilisation: Is the West History? (Channel Four, 10 April 2012). Revealing how British television documentaries construct China through verbal and visual representations as both a rising global power and a potential destabilising force, the book reinforces enduring images of authoritarianism, economic dominance, and ideological opposition. It also highlights the persistence and adaptation of Western epistemological traditions in framing China’s modernity and global role. By bringing together historical, cognitive, and media perspectives, the book provides critical insights into the construction of China in contemporary British media, while offering a nuanced understanding of the broader implications of media framing for Sino-British and Sino-Western relations and international discourse. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of media studies, international relations, Area Studies, and Chinese Studies, as well as journalists, policymakers, and readers interested in contemporary Sino-British and Sino-Western relations.
