스타벅스 명예회장. 1953년 뉴욕 브루클린에서 태어났다. 학창시절 임대아파트에서 자라며 가난이 무엇인지 몸으로 부딪히며 배웠다. 스포츠에 탈출구가 있다는 생각으로 미식축구에 전념했고, 노던미시건대학교 미식축구팀에 합류하려고 했으나 테스트에서 떨어졌다. 어떻게든 학교에 붙어 있어야 한다는 생각으로 연방정부의 학자금 대출을 받고 바텐더 아르바이트를 하며 대학 공부를 마쳤다. 정말 어려울 때는 피를 팔기도 했다.

가족 중 처음으로 대학을 졸업한 후 영업사원으로 일하던 중 미묘한 커피 맛에 반해 작은 커피 회사인 스타벅스에 마케팅 책임자로 합류했다. 4년 뒤인 1986년 이탈리아 스타일의 에스프레소 바를 열기 위해 스타벅스를 떠나 ‘일 지오날레’를 열었고, 1987년 스타벅스를 인수하며 CEO가 되었다.

스타벅스를 운영하면서 파트타이머를 포함한 전 직원에게 건강보험을 제공하고 학비를 지원하며 주식을 나눠주는 등 파격적으로 여겨지는 정책을 도입하면서 사회에 의미 있는 변화를 일으키기 위해 힘썼다. 스타벅스는 하워드 슐츠의 리더십을 바탕으로 전 세계 2만 8,000개 가 넘는 매장을 운영하는 세계 최대의 커피 회사로 성장했으며, 매년 『포춘』이 선정하는 존경받는 기업 명단에 이름을 올리고 있다.
