일흔한 살에 바티칸 최고 건축가로 발탁된 예술가의 좌절과 고뇌, 통찰과 리더십, 그리고 위대한 성취 예술가에게 나이 든다는 것은 어떤 의미일까? 미켈란젤로는 89세까지 살았던 르네상스의 대표적인 예술가다. 그의 생애 전반기가 너무나도 널리 조명을 받았지만, 그 생애 만년도 실은 청장년 시절 못지않게 까다롭고 모험적이었으며 위대한 성취를 이룬 시기였다. 이 책은 생애 마지막 20년을 중점적으로 다룬 전기다. 만년에 미켈란젤로가 거듭되는 좌절과 개인적 상실, 점점 먹어가는 나이, 곧 닥쳐올 것 같은 죽음에 대한 예감 등을 앞에 두고서 어떻게 살아갔으며 어떻게 일했는지를 검토한다. 그는 주위에 어른거리는 죽음의 그림자에 맞서 그저 초연히 물러서지 않았다. 오히려 더 적극적으로 작품 제작에 매달렸다. 뒤집어 말하면 그처럼 많은 일을 했기 때문에 나이를 이겨낼 수 있었다. 늘 바빴던 그의 만년에서 가장 중요한 활동은 단연 성 베드로 대성당 공사였다. 이 대공사는 1505년에 브라만테가 착공하여 1546년 미켈란젤로가 이어받고 17세기 중반에 베르니니가 공식적으로 완공할 때까지 무려 150년이라는 세월이 걸렸다. 수많은 건축가가 건축을 이어갔지만 대성당은 미켈란젤로의 가장 위대한 업적으로 널리 인정받고 있다. 그 까닭은 무엇인지를 이 책에서 소상히 확인할 수 있다. When the Pope handed Michelangelo control of the St. Peter’s project in 1546, it was a study in architectural mismanagement, plagued by flawed design and faulty engineering.
