인도 출신 미국 이민자 가정에서 촉각에 대한 문화 간의 차이를 경험하며 성장했다. 어린 시절 별명이 ‘터치-미-낫(touch-me-not)’이었을 정도로 신체접촉에 심한 거부감을 느꼈으나, 이 책을 집필하며 자신에게도 타인의 손길이 절실했음을 깨달았다. 메리 워싱턴 대학교에서 언론학을 가르치고 있으며, 과학 전문 저널리스트로서 《애틀랜틱》 《엘르》 《슬레이트》 《디스커버》 등 여러 지면에 글을 쓰고 있다.
