When people found out that I was friends with Chang-mo, they never failed to ask, “Why?” This single word contained certainty that there must be some special reason we were friends, sincere concern for me, or subtle reproach for my doing something so reckless. At times, people put up cold yet polite guard behind their smiling faces and began to judge me in a different light. Yet every time, I answered that I was his friend even though I couldn’t explain exactly why. --- p.8
Actually, for a while, I’ve worried about Chang-mo, been cautious of him, felt pity for him, been scared of him, loved him, hated him, missed him, and repeatedly abandoned him and saved him. I knew that none of that was the right solution, but I couldn’t walk away from him when I thought about a world where no one like me existed for Chang-mo, where no one understood or knew what he was feeling, where everyone thought he was just a dangerous monster that needed to be removed from their sight.
We can apply this to the relationship with Chang-mo. How should we treat Chang-mo, who suffers from ASPD? Should we label him as a subject of fear and remove him or eliminate him? Or should we stay with him and help him so that he doesn’t think about doing something terrible? It is obvious that Woo supports the latter. The clue is in the short story. After Chang-mo cursed the pregnant woman on the bus, the narrator quietly explains why his actions were problematic. And Chang-mo’s reaction is surprising. He bursts out laughing and says, “You know, my anger just fades when I talk to you. I was for sure really angry, and I really wanted to kill myself, but then I can’t tell if that’s really how I’d felt. Isn’t that interesting?” It might have been amazing to Chang-mo, but it is nothing to be amazed about. He felt this way because the narrator was the only person who treated Chang-mo as someone she could talk to. And that was probably why Chang-mo “never tried to attack [her], not even once.” The accidental probabilities of myriad (im)possibilities change because of us.
