Ever since I left my parents’ side and fled south during the Korean War in October, 1950, when I was 17 years old, I resolved to visit my parents’ grave once the Korean peninsula is reunified. I wanted to bow before their grave and pray, proudly telling them that “Your son, Seung-man made it to Seoul and is working hard. I worked hard so I wouldn’t let you down.” I wanted to tell them everything I’ve been through during the time we’ve been apart and how much I miss and love them. Looking forward to that day, I had the family shrine and headstones prepared. Now it seems that I will sadly have to give up on that dream.
The fact that I lived through this all was not by my own strength or ability. I owe everything I achieved to you, Father and Mother, watching over me from heaven, and also to those around me who embraced me like their own, and even my boss and colleagues who supported me. But it was especially God’s abounding grace that spared me from death on the battlefield and led me to where I am today. I am especially thankful that when I came to South Korea and was lost and alone, God’s grace kept me from going down the wrong path.
On the 70th anniversary of the Korean War and 70 years since I last saw my family, I humbly write this letter to let you know how I did my best to live a life that would not disappoint you, Father and Mother. I love you, Mother and Father. I miss you so much.
