The beginning of this novel was a few sentences I found in a history book. My gaze lingered on one place, and for a while, I couldn’t turn my head anywhere else. My gaze hovered around those sentences, but the imaginary space grew like a snowball and swallowed the ocean. After much contemplation, I was finally able to place those sentences in a bowl. This is the young adult novel Joseon Bakery, the Birth of Castella.

When the late king(Sukjong) was in his later years and was seeking a different taste in food, his Royal Physician Yi Sipil said, “ When I went to Beijing, I cured General Shenyang Songju and was given some egg rice cakes, which were very soft and excellent. They also considered it a very rare food.”

‘The egg rice cake’ is just the castella, and the scene in which Royal Physician introduces it to the king served as the motive for writing this novel. Of course, it all began with doubt and imagination.

이 소설의 시작은 역사책 속에서 찾은 단 몇 줄의 문장이었다. 시선은 한곳에 머물렀고, 한동안 다른 곳으로 고개를 돌리지 못했다. 시선은 몇 문장에서 맴돌았지만, 상상의 공간은 눈덩이처럼 불어나 바다를 삼킬 듯 커져 나갔다. 오랜 사색을 거치며 이제야 그릇에 담을 수 있었다. 바로 청소년 소설 《조선의 배이거리-카스텔라의 탄생》이다.

선왕(숙종)께서 말년에 음식이 물려 색다른 맛을 찾자, 어의(御醫) 이 시필이 말하길 “연경에 갔을 때 심양장군(瀋陽將軍) 송주(松珠)의 병을 치료해주고 계란떡(?卵?)을 받아먹었는데, 그 맛이 매우 부드럽고 뛰 어났습니다. 저들 또한 매우 진귀한 음식으로 여겼습니다.”라고 했다.

‘계란떡’이 바로 카스텔라이고, 어의가 임금에게 이것을 소 개하는 장면이 바로 이 소설을 쓰는 데 단초역할을 했다. 물 론 시작은 의심과 상상이었다.
