주인공 가온은 음식 만들기에 탁월한 재능이 있다. 돈을 벌기 위해서가 아닌 자기가 좋아하는 일이기 때문에 음식 만들기에 더 열정을 보인다.
주인공은 음식 경연대회에 참가하게 되어 우승한다. 어의는 가온의 뛰어난 실력을 보고 청나라에서 맛본 서양 음식인 카스텔라를 만들어달라고 부탁한다. 카스텔라를 만들면, 주인공 가온은 궁중을 갈 수 있는 특별한 기회를 얻게 된다. 하지만 가온은 어떤 일이든 부정한 방법으로 얻는 것을 싫어한다. 쉬운 길을 버리고 바른길을 선택한 주인공, 하지만 피나는 노력으로 조선 최초의 카스텔라를 만들게 된다.
