한국의 대표적인 사회학자 중 한 명으로, 1980년부터 사회변동 주체에 관하여 열띤 논쟁을 주도했으며 ‘중민이론’을 발전시켰다. 한국사회의 인상적인 발전과 함께 위험사회의 도래를 경고하며 해결책을 소통이론의 관점에서 찾고자 부단히 노력했다. 특별히 이론 연구에 탁월할 뿐 아니라 풍부한 경험적 자료를 제시하였고, 국제적으로 세계석학인 하버마스, 기든스, 울리히 벡, 존 던 등과 깊은 학문적 교류를 지속해 오고 있다. 최근에는 울리히 벡의 탈바꿈metamorphosis 개념을 응용하여 새롭고 심층적인 연구활동을 전개하고 있다.
