호주 시드니에서 태어났다. 「해럴드 트리뷴」, BBC 등에서 근무했으며, 「파이낸셜타임스」에 입사한 뒤에는 베이징지국장, 상하이지국장 등을 역임하면서 중국, 아시아 관련 보도로 이름을 알렸다. 2010년에는 중국 신장지구 폭동 사건 보도로 아시아출판인협회 선정 특종기사 부문‘최고 기자상’을 수상했고, 이 책 『미국, 새로운 동아시아 질서를 꿈꾸는가』로 2018년 호주 총리문학상 논픽션 부문 대상을 수상했다. 현재 「파이낸셜타임스」 워싱턴지국장으로 일하고 있다.
