‘세계국제법협회(International Law Association: ILA)’는 1873년 10월 브뤼셀에서 설립되었다. ILA는 “국제공법과 국제사법의 연구, 명료화 및 발전을 도모하고, 국제사회에서 국제법에 대한 이해와 존중을 더 확장해 나가는 것”을 목적으로 한다. ILA는 국제연합 내의 다른 다수의 특별 기관들과 함께 국제적 비정부기구(NGO)로 자문기구로서 역할(Consultative Statue)을 하고 있다. 본부는 런던에 있으며, 2016년 현재 전 세계 약 3,500명이 회원으로 소속되어 있다. 다수의 ‘국제분과위원회’ 체제로 운영되고 있는 ILA는 2년에 한

ILA는 그동안 ‘해상운송에 관한 헤이그 규칙’, ‘국제상사중재의 규칙’, ‘제한적 무역관행에 관련된 국가의 관할문제에 관한 규칙’, ‘국가면제에 관한 조약을 위한 초안’, ‘문화유산 보호에 관한 협약 초안’, ‘지속가능한 개발에 관한 국제법 원칙의 대한 New Delhi 선언’ 등을 채택함으로써 국제규범의 형성과 발전 과정에 상당한 영향을 미치고 있는 중요한 민간학술단체로 자리 잡고 있다.
