네덜란드 레이던에서 태어났으며 예일 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 1750~1914년 시기 전문가로 유럽 경제사를 연구하고 있다. 최근 들어서는 산업화와 경제 진보가 경제 복지에 미치는 영향뿐 아니라 기술 진보의 경제적?지적 뿌리와 유럽 사회에서 유용한 지식 성장의 이해에 관심을 갖고 있다. 미국 예술 과학 아카데미(American Academy of Arts and Sciences), 계량경제학회(Econometric Society), 계량경제사학회(Cliometric Society)를 비롯해 네덜란드 왕립학회(Dutch Royal Academy)와 이탈리아 아카데미아 데이
