1935년 충남 천안 출생. 연세대학교 문과대학 사학과, 동대학원 사학과(문학석사, 문학박사) 졸업. 문교부 국사편찬위원회 편찬연구관, 수도여자사범대학 역사교육과 조교수, 홍익대학교와 동국대학교 사범대학 역사교육과 교수, 연세대학교 국학연구진흥연구단 연구교수 역임. 현재 동국대학교 명예교수.
