영국의 대표적 작가로 불리울 정도로 그의 작품은 많은 독자들의 사랑을 받고 있으며, 그의 작품들은 성서와 셰익스피어의 작품 다음으로 세계적으로 널리 읽히고 있다. 그는 1812년 영국 남단에 있는 군사 항구인 포츠머스 근교에서 해군성 경리부 서기의 아들로 태어났다.

디킨스는 소년 시절부터 고전을 탐독하면서 일찍부터 문학에 대한 눈을 떴다. 기자 생활을 하면서 겪은 경험과 관찰을 토대로 풍속 스케치를 신문 잡지에 발표하기 시작했다. 이때 발표된 글을 모은 책이 『보스의 스케치집』이고, 이후 그는 『픽윅 페이퍼스』, 『올리버 트위스트』, 『크리스마스의 책』, 『이탈리아 정경』, 『두 도시 이야기』, 『위대한 유산』등 주옥 같은 글을 발표했다.

1867년부터 건강이 나빠져 1870년 6월 저녁 식탁에서 일어서다 갑자기 쓰러졌다. 의식불명인 채 사망하여 웨스트민스터 사원에 묻히기까지 디킨스는 문인으로서 최고의 영예를 누렸으나 만년의 디킨스는 그다지 행복하지 못했다. 어떤 의미에서 디킨스는 대중적 작가로서 현재까지 이름을 남기고 있으며, 영국 문단의 대표적인 문인 중의 하나이다.

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation,but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and “slave” factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years’ formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.
