저자 소개

그림 형제(Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm)

그림의 법칙(Grimm's Law)(1819~1837) : 형 야코프 그림(Jacob Grimm(1785~1863)과 빌헬름 그림(Wilhelm Grimm)(1786~1859)은 아마도 ‘문학사에서 가장 유명한 형제’일 것입니다. 그림 형제하면 이솝 우화(Aesop's Fables)와 함께 어린이들이 꼭 읽는 동화집의 저자로 유명하지만, 사실 그림 형제는 독일 헤센주 마르부르크의 마르부르크 필립스 대학교(Philipps-Universitat Marburg)에서 법학을 전공한 언어학자입니다. 언어학을 연구하는 과정에서 독일 각지의 민담, 설화 등을 대거 수집하였고, 이를 엮어 출간한 것이 현재 전 세계의 어린이들이 읽는 그림 형제 동화집(Grimms' Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm)(1812)입니다.

그림형제는 언어학자로써 1819년부터 1837년까지 4권으로 출간한 독일어 문법(Deutsche Grammatik)을 통해 독어독문학의 기초를 닦았습니다. 원시 인도유럽어, 라틴어, 게르만조어로 같은 단어를 발음할 때 라틴어 p와 독일어 f가 상관관계에 있음을 밝혀, 프랑스어나 이탈리어, 스페인어에 비해 고대 문명 국가인 그리스로마와의 연관관계가 낮다고 여겨지던 독일어 또한 라틴어와 깊은 관련이 있음을 확인하였고 이를 그림의 법칙(Grimm's law)이라고 일컫습니다.

또한 1854년부터 방대한 분량의 독일어 사전을 출간하기 시작하였습니다. 그림 형제가 3권까지 발행한 후 그들의 사후에 독일 언어학자들이 이어받아 1960년 초반까지 33권이 발행됨으로써 마무리된 대사업이니, 언어학자 그림 형제를 단순히 ‘동화작가의 부업’으로 치부하기엔 독일 언어학에서의 업적이 어마무시한 인물입니다. 오히려 ‘언어학자의 부업’이 동화집이라고 봐야겠지요. 이 외에도 괴팅겐 대학교(Universitat Gottingen)에서 근무하며 독일어의 역사(Geschichte der deutschen Sprache)를 출간하는 등 언어학에 대한 연구와 집필을 멈추지 않았습니다.

괴팅겐 7교수 사건(Gottinger Sieben)(1873) : 그림 형제는 독일 니더작센주의 게오르크 아우구스트 괴팅겐 대학교(Georg-August-Universitat Gottingen), 일명 괴팅겐 대학교(Universitat Gottingen)에서 교수로 재직할 당시 하노버의 국왕 에른스트 아우구스트 1세(Ernst August I von Hannover)가 자신의 지위를 확대하기 위한 헌법 개혁에 반대하는 항의서를 출간하였습니다. 이에 국왕은 그림 형제를 포함한 7명의 교수를 심문하고, 전격적으로 해고하였는데 이를 괴팅겐 7교수 사건(Gottinger Sieben)(1873)이라고 합니다. 이 사건으로 인해 그림 형제는 단 3일안에 하노버를 떠나야 했으며, 그들이 베를린으로 이주하는 계기가 되었습니다. 명성과 권위를 인정받는 교수 7명을 하루 아침에 잃은 괴팅겐 대학교(Universitat Gottingen)은 이후 쇠락했다는...

1,000 마르크 화폐 모델(1990~2002) : 독일은 동서독이 통일한 1990년부터 2002년까지 독일 최초이자 최후의 ‘통일 마르크’를 발행하였습니다. 5마르크부터 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 그리고 1,000 마르크까지 8종을 발행하였으며 각권의 앞면에는 독일 출신의 인물을 뒷면에는 그 인물과 관련된 장소, 업적 등을 도안으로 삽입하였습니다. 최고액권 1,000 마르크의 앞면에는 그림 형제의 초상화를, 뒷면에는 그들이 공저한 독일어 사전과 베를린 국립도서관이 담겨 있습니다. 한국인에게, 아니 전 세계인에게 그림형제는 동화집의 저자이지만, 독일에서는 자국의 언어를 집대성한 언어학자로 인식된다는 것을 확인할 수 있는 대목입니다. 2002년 유로화 도입으로 폐지되었습니다.

He met the fox, who gave him the good advice: but when he came to the two inns, his eldest brother was standing at the window where the merrymaking was, and called to him to come in; and he could not withstand the temptation, but went in, and forgot the golden bird and his country in the same manner.”
“세월이 흘렀습니다. 장남이 돌아오지 않고, 소식이 없어지자, 둘째 아들이 길을 나섰는데, 그에게도 똑같은 일이 일어났습니다. 그는 여우를 만났는데, 그는 두 여관에 왔을 때, 큰 오빠가 창가에 서서 들어오라고 불렀고, 유혹을 견디지 못하고 들어갔고, 황금새(golden bird)와 그의 나라를 같은 방식으로 잊었습니다.”

“Jacob wrote that the true poet ‘is like a man who is happy anywhere, in endless measure, if he is allowed to look at leaves and grass, to see the sun rise and set. The false poet travels abroad in strange countries and hopes to be uplifted by the mountains of Switzerland, the sky and sea of Italy. He comes to them and is dissatisfied. He is not as happy as the man who stays at home and sees the apple trees flower in spring, and hears the small birds singing among the branches”

“Some men are born to good luck: all they do or try to do comes right?all that falls to them is so much gain?all their geese are swans?all their cards are trumps?toss them which way you will, they will always, like poor puss, alight upon their legs, and only move on so much the faster. The world may very likely not always think of them as they think of themselves, but what care they for the world? what can it know about the matter?”
