▶ 영국 런던(London, United Kingdom)의 펜톤빌(Pentonville)의 동상(John Stuart Mill Statue) : 존 스튜어트 밀은 1806년 런던 펜톤빌의 13 로드니 스트리트(13 Rodney Street, Pentonville, London)에서 태어났습니다. ▷ 정확한 생가(Birthplace)는 찾을 수 없었습니다만, 인근에 위치한 빅토리아 엠뱅크먼트 가든(Victoria Embankment Gardens)에 가시면 유유히 흐르는 템스 강을 바라보는 존 스튜어트 밀 동상(John Stuart Mill Statue)을 만나보실 수 있습니다. ▷ 빅토리아 엠뱅크먼트 가든(Victoria Embankment Gardens)에 존 스튜어트 밀과 동시대에 함께 활동한 前 아일랜드 수석장관 윌리엄 에드워드 포스터(William Edward Forster, 1818~1886)와 여성운동가 헨리 소머셋 부인(Lady Henry Somerset, 1851~1921)이 함께 있어 외롭진 않을 듯 하네요.

▶ 신을 믿지 않은 영국인이 선택한 대학교, 유니버시티 칼리지 런던(University College London) : 존 스튜어트 밀은 잉글랜드 성공회(Church of England)를 비판한 아버지의 가르침에 따라 옥스퍼드 대학이나 케인브리지 대학교가 아닌, 유니버시티 칼리지 런던(University College London)에 진학하였습니다. ▷ 그는 평생 특정한 종교를 믿지 않은 불가지론자(不可知論者, Agnostic)이자 회의론자(懷疑論者, Sceptic)입니다.

▶ 영국 런던(London, United Kingdom) 리덴홀 스트리트(Leadenhall Street) 동인도 회사(East India House)의 장기근속자?! : 존 스튜어트 밀은 동인도 회사(East India House)에서 1823년(17세)부터 1858년(52세)까지 무려 35년간 근무한 장기근속자입니다. 1858년은 동인도회사가 폐지된 해이니 밀은 그야말로 인생 전체를 한 회사에 몸담은 셈입니다. ▷ 동인도 회사는 월급은 센 반면 근무시간은 비교적 짧았기 때문에 밀이 직장생활과 집필을 병행하기에 최고의 환경을 제공하였으며, 실제로 밀의 작품이 이 시기에 여럿 발표되었습니다. ▷ 밀이 근무한 동인도회사의 위치는 정확하게 확인할 수는 없었으나, 런던에 위치한 동인도 회사는 1648년부터 런던 리덴홀 스트리트(Leadenhall Street)에 위치하였다는 기록을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 이후 주변의 주택을 인수하며 그 규모를 늘려갔습니다.

▶ 영국 런던(London, United Kingdom) 켄싱톤 스퀘어(Kensington Square)의 블루 플라크(Blue Plague) : 존 스튜어트 밀(John Stuart Mill)은 아버지 제임스 밀(James Mill, 1773~1836)이 사망한 후 1837년 켄싱톤 스퀘어의 런던 자택(18 Kensington Square, South Kensington, London, W8 5HH, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea)으로 이주하였습니다. ▷ 밀이 아버지가 설계한 커리큘럼에 따라 동생들을 가르치는 단란함 삶이었으나, 밀이 (훗날 결혼을 하지만) 유부녀 해리엇 테일러 밀(Harriot Taylor Mill, 1807~ 1858)과 만나면서 차츰 균열이 발생하기 시작하였습니다. 가족들로써도 능력 있고, 전도유망한 아들이 아이 셋 딸린 유부녀와 만나는 것을 도저히 용납할 수 없을 것입니다. ▷ 런던 카운티 카운실(London County Council)이 1907년 설치한 블루 플라크(Blue Plague)를 확인할 수 있는 런던의 명소입니다만, 구글맵에는 리뷰가 몇 안 되네요. ▷ 밀은 이후 결혼 생활과 아내의 사망 등으로 켄싱톤 스퀘어(Kensington Square)를 벗어나 블랙히스 공원(Blackheath Park)과 빅토리아 스트리트(10 Albert Mansions, Victoria St.)로 이사하였습니다. 다만 자신이 나고 자란 런던을 벗어나지는 않았습니다.

▶ 세계적인 사상가가 애 셋 딸린 유부녀와 21년 간 열애를?! : 1851년 밀은 해리엇 테일러 밀(Harriot Taylor Mill, 1807~ 1858)과 무려 21년의 조심스러운 열애 끝에 비로소 결혼할 수 있었습니다. 밀이 해리엇을 처음 만난 1830년의 그녀는 세 아이를 가진 유부녀였기 때문에, 대중들이 주목하는 당대의 사상가이자 정치인인 밀에게 그녀와의 스캔들은 그 자체로 정치적인 부담이 될 수밖에 없는 상황이였습니다. ▷ 해리엇은 1833년부터 남편과 별거에 합의하였으며, 케스톤히스(Keston Heath)의 자택에서 머무르며, 보다 자유롭게 밀과 만날 수 있었습니다. ▷ 1849년 해리엇의 ‘공식적인 남편’ 존 테일러(John Taylor, 1826~1849)가 사망하였습니다. 그러나 주변의 눈길을 피하기 위해, 남편의 장례식을 치룬 후에도 밀과 결혼식을 치루기까지 2년이나 기다려야 했습니다. ▶ 해리엇은 아내이기 이전에 밀의 철학과 사상에 영향을 미친 당대의 사상가이자 여성운동가로, 밀은 그녀와의 만남을 통해 인간의 자유와 여성 권리를 옹호하는 저작을 여럿 집필하였습니다. 또한 자신의 작품 곳곳에서 그녀의 영향을 받았음을 강조하는 표현을 삽입하여 그녀에 대한 자신의 애정과 존경을 과시하였습니다. ▷ 독일 베를린에 그녀의 이름을 딴 해리엇 테일러 밀 경제 및 젠더 연구 연구소(Harriet Taylor Mill Institute for Economics and Gender Studies)가 있습니다.

▶ 프랑스 아비뇽(Avignon, France)의 로맨티스트 : 동인도 회사도, 대학교도 떠난 존 스튜어트 밀은 아내 해리엇 테일러 밀(Harriot Taylor Mill, 1807~ 1858)과 홀가분하게 프랑스로 여행을 떠납니다. 그러나 해리엇은 프랑스 아비뇽(Avignon)의 어느 호텔(Hotel d'Europe)에서 폐울혈(Lung Congestion)로 숨을 거두게 됩니다. ▷ 밀은 그녀를 아비뇽 묘지 생 베랑(Avignon Cimetieres ? Saint-Veran)에 안장하였습니다. 이후 인근의 집을 구해 영국과 프랑스를 오가며 여생을 보냈으며, 1873년 5월 생을 마감한 후에는 아내 곁에 안장되었습니다. 프랑스에 대한 호감도 없지 않았겠으나, 그보다는 자신이 사랑한 여인의 곁을 지키기 위해 영국 런던이 아닌, 프랑스 아비뇽에서 말년을 보낸 로맨티스트라고 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다.

▶ 영국 세인트앤드루스(St Andrews, United Kingdom)의 취임사 :　밀은 1865년부터 1868년까지 약 3년간 세인트앤드루스 대학교(University of St Andrews)에 재직하였으며, 1867년 취임 연설은 다음과 같습니다. 같은 기간 런던 웨스트민스터 선거구의 하원의원으로도 활동하였습니다. ▷ "Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing." ▷ "아무도 자신이 참여하지 않거나 의견을 제시하지 않으면 해를 끼칠 수 없다는 망상으로 양심을 달래지 마십시오. 선한 사람이 지켜보고 아무 것도 하지 말아야 한다는 것 외에 나쁜 사람이 자신의 목적을 결정하는 데 더 필요한 것은 없습니다."

▶ 프랑스 곤충학자 장-앙리 파브르(Jean-Henri Fabre, 1823~1915)와의 우정 : 밀은 프랑스 아비뇽에 머물며 틈틈이 곤충관찰과 식물채집을 취미로 즐겼습니다. 당시 교류하던 프랑스 청년 중에 그 유명한 파브르 곤충기(Souvenirs Entomologiques, 1879~1907)의 저자 장-앙리 파브르(Jean-Henri Fabre, 1823~1915)도 있다는 것도 흥미로운 기록이 아닐 수 없습니다. ▷ 곤충이라는 관심사를 공유한 밀은 파브르와 여러 차례 서신을 교환한 것은 물론 그가 곤궁할 때 약간의 돈을 빌려주기도 했습니다. 굳이 받을 생각도 없었지만, 파브르는 자신의 책이 대중적으로 성공한 후에 이를 잊지 않고 갚았다네요. ▷ 장-앙리 파브르 박물관(Harmas Jean-Henri Fabre)은 아비뇽에서 기차와 버스로 불과 1시간 거리에 있습니다.

▶ 노벨문학상 수상자(1950) 버트런드 러셀(Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, OM, FRS, 1872~1970)의 대부(代父) : 밀은 세인트앤드루스 대학교(University of St Andrews)에 재직할 당시 버트런드 러셀 부모의 부탁을 받고, 1872년 태어난 그의 대부(代父)를 맡았습니다. ▷ 러셀의 아버지 앰벌리 자작 존 러셀(John Russell, Viscount Amberley, 1842~1876)은 무신론자이자 당시로써는 과격한 산아제한(가족계획)의 지지자로써 같은 철학을 공유하는 존 스튜어트 밀에게 호감을 느꼈습니다. 밀은 이듬해(1873년) 사망했기 때문에 버트런드 러셀과 딱히 교류는 없었습니다만, 이후 그의 저작만큼은 러셀의 삶에 지대한 영향을 미치게 됩니다.
