▶ 영어근대소설의 아버지(The Father of Modern Novel in English) : ▷ 영어를 누가 창시했는지는 알 수 없지만, 영어로 쓰인 영어소설의 창시자(Founder of The English Novel)로 손꼽히는 작가와 작품은 꽤나 다양합니다. 영어소설은 지역적으로 살펴봐도 영국이란 단일 국가를 넘어서 스코틀랜드, 웨일즈, 북아일랜드 등까지 확장되기 때문에 영국인이 아닌 작가의 작품까지 포괄하는 방대한 개념입니다. ▷ 특히 영국에서는 18세기 출간된 새뮤얼 리처드슨(Samuel Richardson, 1689~1761)의 서간체 소설 파멜라(Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded, 1740)와 클라리사(Clarissa, 1747)를 최초의 영어소설(First Novel in English)이라고 주장하는 의견이 많은데, 새뮤얼과 함께 거론되는 작가가 바로 헨리 필딩(Henry Fielding, 1707~1754)입니다. 헨리 필딩은 새뮤얼과 동시대에 활동한 작가로, 새뮤얼의 작품 파멜라가 출간되자 이듬해 이를 저격하는 패러디 샤멜라 앤드류스의 삶에 대한 사과 1741(An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews by Henry Fielding)을 출간하고 큰 인기를 끈 작가로, 샤멜라 앤드류스의 폭발적인 인기에 힘입어 스핀오프격인 조지프 앤드류스(Joseph Andrews, 1742)까지 출간하였습니다. ▷ 작가가 직접 경험한 것이 아니라 누군가에게 건네 들었다는 형식을 취했거나, 전형적인 모험담 혹은 교훈을 전달하기 위한 우화 등 기존의 영어소설과 달리 헨리 필딩은 소설로써의 재미와 흥미, 허구적인 상상력을 극대화하였다는 평가를 받습니다. 국내 독자에게는 그리 잘 알려지지 않은 헨리 필딩이 ‘영어근대소설의 아버지(The Father of Modern Novel in English)’로 손꼽히는 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다.
