▶ 존 로크(John Locke, 1632~1704)

▶ 영국 최초의 경험론자(the first of the British empiricists), 존 로크(John Locke FRS, 1632~1704) : 영국 최초의 경험론자(the first of the British empiricists), 자유주의의 아버지(Father of Liberalism), 사회 계약론(social contract theory)과 인식론(認識論, Epistemology)의 철학자... 영국의 철학자이자 정치사상가 존 로크는 재판관들의 서기(clerk to the Justices) 겸 변호사(attorney) 아버지 존(John)과 어머니 아그네스 킨(Agnes Keene) 사이에서 1632년 영국 섬머셋셔(Somersetshire) 라잉턴(Wrington)에서 독실한 청교도(Puritans) 가문의 아이로 태어났습니다.

▶ “To love truth for truth's sake is the principal part of human perfection in this world, and the seed-plot of all other virtues.” ▷ “진리를 위해 진리를 사랑하는 것은 이 세상에서 인간 완성의 주요 부분이고, 다른 모든 미덕의 씨앗 줄거리입니다.”

▶ 1647년 런던의 웨스트민스터 학교(Westminster School)를 거쳐, 1652년 옥스퍼드 크라이스트 처치(Christ Church, Oxford)로 진학하였습니다. 1656년에는 학사(a bachelor's degree)를, 1658년에는 석사(a master's degree)를 취득한 후에도 학업을 이어갔고, 1675년 의학 학사(a bachelor of medicine)를 취득하였습니다. 1667년부터 앤서니 애슐리 쿠퍼(Anthony Ashley Cooper)의 개인 주치의(personal physician)로 고용되어 런던 액서터 하우스(Exeter House in London)에서 근무를 시작하였습니다.

▶ “Our Business here is not to know all things, but those which concern our conduct.” ▷ “여기서 우리의 사업은 모든 것을 아는 것이 아니라 우리의 행동에 관련된 것들을 아는 것입니다.”

▶ 제1대 섀프츠베리 백작 앤서니 애슐리 쿠퍼(Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, 1621~1683)는 휘그당(Whig Party)을 창시한 영국의 정치가로써 존 로크를 고용한 고용주이자, 그의 활동을 지지한 든든한 후원자이기도 했습니다. Calebe Banks의 주치의로 프랑스를 다녀온 후 애슐리의 권유로 절대왕정에 대한 주장을 담은 통치론(Two Treatises of Government, 1689) 초안을 집필하였으며, 훗날 그의 자연권(自然權, natural rights)과 정부(government)에 대한 사상은 이후 영국을 넘어 세계 각지의 민주주의 정부 수립에 기여하게 됩니다.

▶ “Revolt is the right of the people.” ▷ “반란은 국민의 권리입니다.”

▶ 존 로크는 1683년 영국 찰스 2세(Charles II, 1630~1685)와 요크 공작(Duke of York) 제임스(James II of England, 1633~1701)를 암살하려는 라이 하우스 음모(Rye House Plot)에 연루된 혐의로 네덜란드로 도피하였다가, 명예혁명(名譽革命, Glorious Revolution, 1688) 이후에야 귀향할 수 있었습니다. 역사상 수많은 문인들이 그러했듯 존 로크 또한 망명 시기에 그의 대표작 관용에 관한 편지(A Letter Concerning Toleration, 1689), 통치론(Two Treatises of Government, 1689), 인간지성론(An Essay concerning Human Understanding, 1695) 등을 구상하고, 집필하였습니다.

▶ “New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not common.” ▷ “새로운 의견들은 다른 이유 없이 항상 의심받고, 보통 반대합니다. 하지만 그것들은 흔하지 않기 때문입니다.”

▶ 존 로크는 친구 레이디 마샴(Lady Masham)의 초대로 1700년부터 오테스(at Otes in Essex)에 머물렀고, 1704년 72세의 나이의 독신남으로 사망하였습니다. 이는 잉글랜드 왕국과 스코틀랜드 왕국이 합병한 1707년 연합법(Acts of Union 1707)이 결의되기 3년 전입니다.

▶ “I pretend not to teach, but to inquire; and therefore cannot but confess here again,?that external and internal sensation are the only passages I can find of knowledge to the understanding. These alone, as far as I can discover, are the windows by which light is let into this DARK ROOM. For, methinks, the understanding is not much unlike a closet wholly shut from light, with only some little openings left, to let in external visible resemblances, or ideas of things without: which, would they but stay there, and lie so orderly as to be found upon occasion, it would very much resemble the understanding of a man, in reference to all objects of sight, and the ideas of them.” ▷ “저는 가르치는 척하지 않고 질문하는 척합니다. 따라서 여기서 다시 고백하지 않을 수 없습니다. 외적, 내적 감각만이 제가 이해할 수 있는 지식에 대한 유일한 통로입니다. 제가 알 수 있는 한, 이것들만이 이 어두운 방에 빛이 들어오는 창문입니다. 제가 생각하기에는, 그 이해는 단지 약간의 틈만 남겨둔 채, 외부의 눈에 보이는 유사점이나 사물에 대한 생각들을 그냥 들여놓는 벽장과는 크게 다르지 않습니다. 그것은 단지 그곳에 머물기만 한다면, 그리고 때때로 발견될 수 있을 정도로 질서정연하게 놓여 있는, 그것은 모든 것에 대한 인간의 이해와 매우 흡사할 것입니다.
