▶ 벤자민 프랭클린(Benjamin Franklin, 1706~1790)

▶ 미국 건국의 아버지(Founding Fathers of the United States) 벤자민 프랭클린(Benjamin Franklin) : 미국은 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스(Christopher Columbus, 1450~1506)가 서유럽 최초로 발견한 신대륙에 1607년 영국인이 이주하기 시작하면서 영국의 식민지로 출발한 국가입니다. 영국과 프랑스의 대립을 틈타 1774년 7월, 미국은 영국으로부터 독립을 선언하였으며 이 과정에 공로가 큰 이들을 미국 건국의 아버지(Founding Fathers of the United States)이라 부릅니다. 미국 독립 선언에 서명을 한 56명의 대표단이 특히 중요하며, 이를 기반으로 미국 헌법이 제정되었습니다.

▷ 아버지가 56명이라니 좀 많기는 합니다만, 벤자민 프랭클린은 영국령 미국 보스턴에서 출생(1706)한 ‘이민자의 후예’로써 미국 독립 선언과 미국 헌법 제정 회의에 둘 다 서명한 8인의 하나였을 뿐 아니라, 4명의 주지사(존 디킨슨, 존 랭던, 존 러틀리지) 중 한 명으로 특히 주목할 만한 인물이 아닐 수 없습니다. 美 건국 과정에서 영국 식민지를 대표하는 대변인으로써 펜실베이니아 주 하원의장(1764), 미국의 제1대 우정장관(1775~1776), 펜실베이니아 주 제6대 행정위원회 위원장(1785~1788)을 비롯해 미국의 제1대 프랑스 주재 대사(1778~1785), 미국의 제1대 스웨덴 주재 대사(1782~1783) 등 요직을 두루 수행해, 퍼스트 아메리칸(The First American)이라 불렸습니다.

▶ “The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” ▷ “헌법은 미국 국민들에게 행복을 추구할 권리를 보장해 줄 뿐입니다. 여러분 스스로 직접 잡아야 합니다.”

▶ 벤저민은 팔방미인(八方美人)?! : 벤저민 프랭클린은 팔방미인이란 칭호가 아깝지 않을 정도로 다양한 분야를 망라하며 활동한 인물입니다. 가난한 리처드의 연감(Poor Richard's Almanack, 1732)을 집필한 작가(Writer), 펜실베니아 가제트(the Pennsylvania Gazette)와 책을 출판한 창간인(Publisher) 겸 인쇄업자(Printer), 미국 최초의 우정장관(the first United States postmaster general)을 역임한 정치인(Politician)이자 정치가(Statesman), 과학자(Scientist)이자 발명가(Inventor), 유머리스트(Humorist), 도서관과 필라델피아 대학교(Academy and College of Philadelphia, 현 펜실베니아 대학교)를 설립한 시민운동가(Civic activist)이자 초대 총장(the first president), 미국을 대표하는 외교관(Diplomat), ……. 그 중에서도 가장 오래 수행한 본업은 역시 정치와 외교일 것입니다. 1764년 펜실베이니아 주 하원의장을 시작으로, 1788년까지 펜실베이니아 주와 미국의 장관직과 서유럽 주재 대사로 역임하였습니다.

▶ “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” ▷ “지식에 대한 투자는 항상 최고의 이자를 지불합니다.”

▶ 벤자민 프랭클린의 고향, 매사추세츠(Massachusetts) 주(州) 보스톤(Boston) : 美 전역에서 그의 이름이 붙은 학교를 만날 수 있습니다만, 그가 태어난 보스톤(Boston)은 그가 태어난 생가(Ben Franklin House)와 동상(Benjamin Franklin Statue), 그의 유언으로 1908년 설립된 과학 기구 Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology가 있는 ‘벤자민의 고향’입니다. 벤자민은 보스톤 라틴 스쿨(Boston Latin School)을 다녔으나, 졸업은 하지 않았습니다.

▶ “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” ▷ “말해 주면 잊어버리고, 가르쳐 주면 기억할 수도 있지만, 참여시키면 배울 수 있습니다.”

▶ 펜실베니아(Pennsylvania) 주 필라델피아(Philadelphia)는 美 전역에서 ‘벤자민의 흔적이 가장 많이 남아 있는 지역’입니다. 그의 이름이 붙은 다리(Benjamin Franklin Bridge)를 따라 댈러웨이 강(Delaware River)을 건너면 벤자민 프랭클린 박물관(Benjamin Franklin Museum)과 묘(Benjamin Franklin's Grave)가 있으며, 그의 이름이 붙은 광장(Franklin Square), 대로(Benjamin Franklin Pkwy), 기관(Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary) 등도 여럿 있습니다.

▶ 벤자민 프랭클린이 과학자(Scientist)이자 발명가(Inventor)라고?! : 놀랍게도 그는 계몽 사상가이자, 과학자 겸 발명가로써 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 직접 실험하고, 이를 바탕으로 새로운 발명품을 제작한 인물입니다. 그의 발명품으로 프랭클린 스토브(Franklin stove), 피뢰침(Lightning rod), 이중초점 렌즈(Bifocal eyeglasses), 글라스 하모니카(Glass harmonica), 프랭클린의 종(Franklin bells) 등을 꼽을 수 있습니다. 그가 발명한 이중초점 렌즈는 그가 지인에게 보낸 편지의 상세한 기록 덕분에 밝혀진 것으로 벤자민은 생전에 자신의 발명품을 출원해 수익을 창출하는데 큰 관심이 없었기 때문에 벤자민의 발명가로써의 면모는 ‘정치인이자 외교관’에 비해 상대적으로 널리 알려지지 않았습니다. 그러나 그가 발명한 피뢰침 덕분에 벼락으로 인한 피해와 인명 사고가 획기적으로 개선될 수 있었으며, 프랭클린 스토브는 현재까지도 판매되고 있으니 ‘발명가 벤자민’ 또한 기억할만한 그의 면모일 것입니다.

▶ “If all printers were determined not to print anything till they were sure it would offend nobody, there would be very little printed.” ▷ “만약 모든 인쇄기가 아무도 불쾌감을 느끼지 않을 때까지 아무것도 인쇄하지 않기로 결정한다면, 인쇄되는 것은 거의 없을 것입니다.”

▶ 유이(唯二)한 비대통령 미국 화폐 모델 : 어느 국가든 화폐에 등장하는 인물은 그 나라를 대표하는 위인입니다. 역사가 짧은 미국에서는 대체로 화폐에 대통령을 새겨 넣고 있습니다만, 대통령이 아님에도 불구하고 화폐에 그려진 인물이 두 명 있으니 그 중 하나가 바로 벤자민 프랭클린입니다. 벤자민과 알렉산더 해밀턴(Alexander Hamilton, 1755?~1804)은 각각 100 달러와 10달러에 그려져 있습니다. 알렉산더 해밀턴 또한 벤자민과 동시대에 활약한 정치인이자 법률가로, 미국 건국의 아버지(Founding Fathers of the United States) 중 한 명입니다. 미국 동전은 1센트, 5센트, 10센트, 25센트, 50센트 그리고 1달러로 구성되어 있으며 각각 페니(Penny), 니클(Nickel), 다임(Dime), 쿼터(Quarter), 하프 달러(Half Dollar), 원 달러(One Doller)라 불립니다. 지폐와 마찬가지로 미국을 대표하는 위인이 뒷면에 새겨져 있으며, 벤자민 프랭클린은 50센트 동전, 즉 하프 달러(Half Dollar)의 주인공입니다.
